MORE-THAN-HUMANS LAB: Research in Improvisation, Butoh, and Somatics
« How are you designed? The remnant, the marker? Do you hold the line for how we might unite? Are you the banner, for what we might be? Are we the quality of the universe? And would you call that universeness or university? The practice of being the universe is not yet done.” Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Self Portrait as a Hurricane
To help the depopulation of the world, we repopulate our imaginations. In an openly political and ecological approach, we engage the body in a search for different ways to connect with the disappearances and the teeming precariousness of our time.
Rather than viewing humanity as a disruptive force, we aim to cultivate a profound love for the earth by embracing alternative modes of affectivity. Through an exploration of a variety of timescales and a tuning into rhythms and temporalities beyond human counting, we seek to deepen our understanding of what it means to identify with flora, fauna, soil, rocks, and rivers.
By delving into pre-verbal poetry we engage in a dance of intimate generosity that challenges conventional convictions in favor of a more-than-human ethic. Opening to non-scientific way of knowing, we invite you to question and explore new dimensions of connection with the world around us.
Through a crossing of disciplines such as Butoh, somatics (BMC and Continuum inspired), poetry and philosophy, we intend to play with the liminal possibilities of performance. as well as with extended scores to allow a deeper questioning of ourselves in interaction with the environment and its unobtrusive perspectives. Improvisation and dance call for a political and irrational attempt to perceive and rediscuss our ecologies and affects. Our practice trains the perceptions to enhance the sense of togetherness and renew and question the enchantment to be in the world.
